CASE STUDY
Analysis of New Airport Configuration and Airspace Procedure
for an Airport in South Africa
Jeppesen's TAAM Consulting Team was asked to perform "what-if"
simulations, and capacity and efficiency analysis for a large
airport in South Africa. The Team did the following:
- Modelled complete ground operation of aircraft
- Modelled airspace, including 11 satellite airports
- Prepared 48 scenarios for the airport phase
- Prepared a series of simulations for a baseline airspace
configuration and two alternatives, as identified by the
local CAA.
Outcomes
- Current capacity and efficiency limits of airport and
surrounding airspace were assessed
- Capacity and efficiency limits for alternate airport configurations
were assessed, with increasing traffic levels of up to 40%
- Increased traffic flow for surrounding airspace was assessed.
Results demonstrated increases of 10% for all satellite
airports; and 20-40% for one group, and 10% for the second
group of satellite airports.
Successes
The project was successful, with outcomes showing which new
airport configuration was optimal, and how airspace procedure
could be improved.
The results included significant savings and an increase
in revenue for the client. The project was also completed
on time and within budget.
